The Fastest Kiss - part seven (the last one)

It has been 3 and a half miles, Thomas is now just 50 meters behind him, but isn’t getting anymore closer to him. Clarice calls him on the radio:
- What’s your speed?
- 350 Km/h! For the love of God I’m almost dirtying my pants!
- Hold steady Thomas, now you must push the black button, and turn off the engine of the car, when I say it.
- WHAT? Turn it off? Are you insane?
- Just do it, without further questions. If you don’t do that after pressing the button, the engine will explode.
He pushes the button. The car trunk’s door slowly opens, revealing what’s inside. Suddenly, an explosion is heard, and Thomas feels something pushing the car forward even faster. By the side mirror, he sees a huge tail of fire getting out of his car.
- Turn the engine off! – Clarice said, at the same time that Thomas did it. – Thomas, this thing behind you is a rocket propeller adapted in the back of the car. The high temperatures won’t affect you, because you are protected with thermal isolant composites. It’s sort of a ceramic material, the same used by NASA.
- Oh my God! Do you want to kill me?
350... 360... 380... 400 Km/h, his speed continues rising, approaching Rabbit very fast.
- Now Thomas, when you overtake Rabbit’s position, go very close of him, to burn him like a chicken!
And so Thomas did it. In a blink of an eye, Rabbit sees what was going to be a victory, turning into a nightmare. The fire from the rear of Thomas’s car somehow gets Rabbit’s, spreading it through the vehicle quickly. Thomas looks the mirror again; he is being pursuit by a fireball.
- What’s going on? Rabbit is literally burning.
- Let’s just say that his car wax was a little bit modified, with some flammable substances. Marcus has done a fine job on that.
Thomas crosses the finish line, looking the fire rabbit behind him exploding and falling of a cliff. Clarice’s revenge is done.
- I’ve crossed the line, now how am I supposed to stop the car? It is 500 Km/h!
- Release the black button.
By doing it, the rocket stops to work and three parachutes open, slowing his speed until it stops.
- Thomas, now you need to get away of it, before the air around you gets too hot to breathe. I’m going there, just wait for me.
She gets there, just some minutes later, with the winning prize on her hands.
- Here, this is for you, 5000 dollars.
- Thank you very much. Now, what are you going to do?
- I’m going back to France. Marcus will help me with it.
Thomas gives her a ride to the docks, while Marcus drives the rocket-car to there.
- I think it’s time to say good bye. You’ve been so kind to me, how can I ever pay you back?
- It was my pleasure.
She looks deeply in his eyes, slowly gets up from the wheelchair, falling in his arms. Then, like if it has been written by someone else, they kiss each other, under the sunrise in the sea, and she goes away, while Thomas stand still, looking to her leaving and wondering why he could let his love go away so easily.

The Fastest Kiss - part six

That night, Thomas has talked to David, setting all the things for the contest. It’ll be in two days from now, in a 5 mile straight circuit in the state road.
While Thomas was working hard in these two days, Clarice was in touch with her associate in the docks, who was fixing up her car to the race, and doing other kind off stuff for her.
The day has come. It’s 3 o’clock in the morning, the road is completely quiet. Thomas and Clarice, who is on a wheelchair, are going to the designated place in Thomas’s car, while Marcus, Clarice’s associate, brings her car there. David, Fairy and even Rat are waiting for them at the local.
- So, this is your car. – Thomas said, while Marcus was coming by – It doesn’t look too fast to me.
- But it is, you’ll have to believe. Since I am not going with you, I’ll give the instructions by radio.
- Fine for me.
Clarice’s car is a sportive model, of unknown brand, like if it was specially designed to her. All glasses are reflective; the car’s body has an opaque dark grey colour. It has only the driver’s seat, although it seems to be a car for five passengers. Behind the driver’s seat, it has a solid wall, made of carbon fibre, which covers from the floor to the car’s roof, and completely hides what’s inside of it. In the roof, it has some air entrances, to supply whatever is inside that wall. The panel has a digital speed counter, and four distinguished buttons: a green, a yellow, a red and a black button. On the side of the pilot, are three nitro tanks, each one of them with coloured tags on the surface, green, yellow, and red tags respectively.
Rabbit has come. He doesn’t says a word, just gets positioned in the starting line.
- Since everyone is here, I am going to the finish line. Fairy is going to give the starting shot, in 15 minutes from now. – David said.
- Get ready Thomas. Don’t worry, everything will be fine.
Thomas sat behind the direction wheel, side by side with Rabbit. His hands were sweating, Clarice talking with him on the radio, calming him down. Fairy gets to her position, and they start their engines. Rabbit’s engine it’s much louder than Thomas’s, making him even more nervous. Fairy talks to David on the phone, confirming the situation. She raises her hand, they step on the accelerator, she drops them, and they furiously go trough the dark road.
Rabbit jumped to the first place, making a considerable large distance between them, like if Thomas had given a head start.
- Press the green button! – Clarice said, nervously.
- Rabbit is going too fast, I can’t follow him! – Thomas said, pushing the button – Your car seems to be much heavier than his.
- It’s everything according to the plan; keep your foot down to the max. Listen carefully, your going to do this: by the end of the first mile, press the yellow button, and by the end of the second, the red button. You’ll be getting very close of him in the third mile, more or less.
Even after pressing the green button, Rabbit is getting distant from Thomas. When Thomas pressed the yellow button, Rabbit stabilised 500 meters in front of him. Thomas looked at the speed counter: 235 Km/h. He almost passed out. The most amazing thing is that everything happened in less than 40 seconds.
When he pressed the red button, he substantially reduced the distance from Rabbit. Thomas is 100 meters behind Rabbit, and getting closer. He looked again to the speed counter: 322 Km/h.

The Fastest Kiss - part five

At the first moment, she hasn’t reacted to it. However, some minutes later, her hands start moving. Her heart starts to beat faster, and she was getting pallid, and so was Thomas. He could loose his license, if someone discovers what he has done, but he wasn’t caring if that happened. The only thing he cares is her. When he was about to call for help, she opens her eyes.
- Hi, I’m Thomas, and I’m your doctor.
- What’s happening?
- You are in a hospital. You were involved in a car accident six months ago, and were here in coma since then. Can you tell me what your name is?
- My name is Clarice Nouveau.
- Nouveau? Are you from France?
- Yes. – Her accent confirmed it too.
- Right, that explains why you haven’t any registration, Social Security Number or else. Don’t you have a passport?
- No, I don’t. I came to US illegally.
- Why had you done that?
- The United States have great street racers. So, I decided to go around the biggest cities, challenging them. I had got succeeded, until I’d met Rabbit...
- I know that story.
- Thomas, I need to ask you a favour.
- And what’s that?
- Please, you have to race against Rabbit, and beat him!
- What? You know I can’t do that, he is a skilled pilot, and I’m just a doctor.
- No, he is not as skilled as you think. He has a fast car, and is very treacherous against other pilots.
- Why don’t you do that, when recovered from this condition?
- I don’t know if I’m going to be able to race ever again. Here, take this key, – Clarice gives him sort of a key, which was placed in a necklace, around her neck – this is a key to a bank’s safe vault. There you’ll find some money, a car key and my agenda. Get those for me, and we talk later.
Without arguing, Thomas finished his work and got those things for her. There was around 20 000 dollars in the vault, and the other things as well.
- Ok, that’s my plan. You’ll talk to David, he’ll arrange you the race against Rabbit, and he holds the bets. Tell him that Clarice sent you. Don’t worry about the car; it’s in a warehouse near the harbour.
- What part of “I can’t race” had you not listened?
- Are you afraid of him? I have the fastest car in these streets; it’ll make Rabbit looks like a turtle racing with you. Here is the deal: you are going to place 10000 on the race with David, otherwise, Rabbit might not accept your challenge for less than that.
- If you say so. Now I’m curious to see your car. It must be quite a machine.
- You won’t regret waiting to see it, I assure you. And by the way, could you by me a cell phone? I need to talk with some people.

The Fastest Kiss - part four

In the next day, he contacts a friend that works with pharmaceutical development and analysis:
- Hey John, how are you? I need a big favour from you. You see, I have sort of a medicine with me, and I want you to analyse it for me.
- Sure, it’ll be done in a day or so.
“I can’t wait a whole day to know it. I think I’ll test it myself.” thought Thomas. Then it comes up to his mind this idea. He has bought a hamster to participate on his little experiment, then has weight the pill, has done some proportional equations to give the correct amount of the drug to the little rodent, without killing it, then mixed it with water, giving the moisture to the animal.
It was quite of a view, a doctor entering the hospital with a hamster cage under his arm. The receptionist had stopped him.
- Thomas, what are you doing with this animal?
- Hi, this is a gift to my nephew. Since I can’t leave it alone at home, may you watch it for me while I’m working? I would really appreciate if you do that for me.
- Ok.
- Thank you very much! Here is some pet food.
It was a regular, although very long day for Thomas in the hospital. Suddenly, the receptionist bips him.
- So, what’s going on?
- Your hamster is dead.
- What? How come? – Thomas said, trying to fake surprise.
- It had drunk all the water, and then had started spinning in his wheel, and after some time, he passed out. It was funny actually, because the wheel was spinning with it rolling unconscious inside.
- Damn! Let me get rid of it. – He said, taking it to the trash, and thinking of how tragic it could’ve been if given to humans.
Waiting for the test’s results was terrifying. When John called him, he was absolutely nervous.
- Tell me John, what do you have discovered?
- Thomas, this drug contains a powerful neurotransmitter substance, which induces a massive brain activity.
- Is it fatal?
- Only if you are a small mammal. This pill can’t kill a man, unless if you take a bunch of them, having an overdose.
- I’ve tested it in a hamster, and even with a controlled dosing, it has died.
- That’s because their excretory system is very sensitive. What probably has happened was a failure of that system, and it couldn’t filter its blood anymore, dying intoxicated. I’ll send you my complete report soon.
- Thank you, John, you’ve been tremendously helpful. I owe you one.
- It was my pleasure. Don’t be a stranger, see you then.
Obviously, Thomas’s plans were to wake up his sleepy friend, now with this drug, and a confirmed low probability of death, he could make it happen. He grabs a pill, mixes it with serum, put it in a needle, and injects it in the woman’s vein.

The Fastest Kiss - part three

Thomas has started looking for him near the accident site. James couldn’t live too far away from there, since he was there to help on that night; however, homeless people tend to have a nomad life. Not finding a single sign of him, Thomas has decided to look around, asking people about Rat. Two blocks from there, there is a Donut Store, where Thomas asked for his man.
- Yes, he comes over here every evening. It’s nice to talk with him; he has so much experience in living in the streets, so many stories to tell. Usually, I give to him our oldest donuts, that can’t be selling anymore. – said the waitress.
Obviously, Thomas has decided to wait for Rat. He had spent his time talking to Meredith, the waitress, about what are Rat’s habits. She said that Rat usually goes to the entrance of a club, The Lion’s Den, after leaving this place. He watches the cars, in exchange for some spare change.
Finally, Rat had got over there. Meredith introduced them, and Thomas started questioning:
- Hi James, my name is Thomas, I am a physician and I need to ask you some things.
- Right, but before we talk, could you buy something for me to eat? I’m starving!
- Of course...
After ordering a burger, with fries and a milk shake for both, they start talking.
- So, about the car accident where you helped this beautiful lady, what do you remind about it?
- I just had left this donut house that night, going to the Den, when I saw everything. A white car bumped on her car, leaving the scene very fast. I quickly called 911, and then went to the car, to see what had happened. She was conscious, and said a thing about a rabbit, or something.
- Rabbit? That’s really strange. – Thomas said, thinking about the girl’s words.
- You wanna know what’s really strange? After that, I went to The Lion’s Den, and what did I find there?
- What?
- The same white car that smacked her! The man who was driving it was next to it, counting a bunch of dollar bills. I asked a friend of mine about him, and she said that he is an important client of her and David.
- David? And who is she?
- David is The Lion’s Den owner. My friend is called Fairy, and work for David too.
- Can you get me to there?
- Yes, no problem.
Getting there, Rat came to talk with Fairy. She is slightly suspicious about Thomas, but has agreed to talk with him.
- Hi honey, what’s your poison?
- My poison?
- Yeah, your poison... women, drugs or drinking?
- Actually, I’m looking for someone.
- You know, information has a price too.
- Right, right. What kind of stuff do you sell?
- All the stuff you can sniff, swallow or inject. We have this new thing; people are calling it “The Kiss”. It’s cheaper then Ecz, and gives you the same effect.
- Why do they call it from that?
- Because it’s so powerful, that can even wake up the Sleeping Beauty.
- I’ll buy some of them, if you say what I wanna hear.
- What do you want to know, sweetie?
- Tell me what you know about Rabbit.
- Rabbit? He’s one of our biggest customers. He’s such a skilled street racer, no one can beat him.
- How do I find him?
- You don’t find him, he finds you. And why do you wanna meet him? To be beaten like everyone before? Trust me; you’ll be wasting your time and money.
- I see. Well, I think I might be going.
Saying that, Thomas gives her some money, in exchange for some “kisses”. He keeps them, and makes his way back home.

The Fastest Kiss - part two

First day as an intern in the hospital, Thomas is pure excitement. After all those years in Med School, now he is ready for some action. He starts doing his usual rounds, checking all of his newly assigned patients. One of them especially catches his attention.
- Hi, have you seen the patient of the room 304? – He asks Lucy, one of the nurses.
- The girl in coma? Oh yeah, she is such a beautiful woman.
- For sure. For how long has she been in that state?
- About six months. She got here after being involved in a car accident.
- Any relatives?
- None. No documents too. We assume that she is around 22, 23 years old. It’s really a shame, loosing the best time of her life in that condition.
Thomas was working really hard, but couldn’t stop thinking about the girl. She has dark hair, a good-shaped body, and green eyes. Every time that he had spare time, he spent it watching her, while she sleeps continuously, like if he was hypnotized by her beauty. One of these times, he was sitting next to her, almost falling asleep, when she had started doing something. Her face had begun to move, like if she was having a nightmare. Unfortunately, Thomas wasn’t paying too much attention on her. Her arms had started to shake, making the serum to fall all over the floor, finally waking up Thomas. His first reaction was to check her vital signals, and seeing that none of them were wrong, he’d grabbed her hand, trying to calm her down. By then, not just her arms were shaking, but her body too. Thomas was getting anxious, and when he was about to call for a senior doctor, she’d stopped shaking, whispering some words: “Rabbit... Catch the Rabbit”, and had felt in her continuous sleep again.
Thomas was completely astounded. What was that supposed to mean? He has decided to investigate about it. On his day off, he goes to the library, looking for newspapers that could give him a clue. After hours searching, one of the news gives him a hint: “Homeless man saves a woman involved in a horrible car accident”.
- That’s what I’m looking for! – Thomas said, reading it.
“James Turner, as know as Rat by his friends, called the emergency, after whitnessing this terrible car accident, where a woman collided in a tree after being hit by another car, which had run away without giving any kind of help. James Turner stood beside the woman, keeping her awake while the paramedics were on their way to the car crash. The woman’s condition is stabilized, but she is still unidentified.”
- Well, I need to find this James Turner, he may help me to discover what happened – had thought Thomas.

The Fastest Kiss - part one

She is looking to the road. Nothing can bring her attention out of the way, she is so focused. The crowd is loud, and the other racers are as nervous as she is. The engine is ready; she shifts to the first gear. Her left foot, holding the clutch, seems to have the biggest responsibility that it trembles. The lights are on, actually it is just one person holding a flashlight, but still, nobody can take the eyes off that light. A blink of an eye could determine who wins or who looses.
Her engine sings, and she knows how to dance that music. They start. The streets were quiet, until that moment. Four cars, only one way, it is extremely dangerous to pass another car. Unfortunately, she is at the third position. However, that doesn’t matter for such an eager and ambitious girl like her. Nothing matters, nor if the engine blows, nor if the car crashes, does she only think about the victory.
Incredibly, she gets side by side with the second place racer. They’re moving into an S- shaped turn. The other car, going by the interior part of the road, is almost a car distant in front of her, but she won’t give up her position that easily. It’s time to smoke him! She pushes the nitro button, and when the turn gets favorable to her, she had overtaken the other car’s position. Now, there is still one missing rabbit to pursuit.
The Rabbit, it’s the nickname of this amazing street racer. His car is white, with red details, such as the glass film, and the stickers in the side of the car. And how fast he is. However, being fast is not enough. She knows every detail of the track, and takes a shortcut reducing all the distance between them. With a swift maneuver, the first position is taken by her.
The race is almost over, she is winning, and her heart is beating as fast as her car. Just one last turn, and the victory will be on her hands. She can hear all the people screaming, saluting her as she approaches. A hairpin bend of the street, Rabbit is on her side mirror, she is so confident about the victory, that couldn’t see that coming. The rabbit didn’t slow down to complete the curve. He just threw his car over her, while turning. She had lost the control of the car, getting out of the track, hitting a tree, while Rabbit was finishing in first. Tough luck.
